In this arrangement for two harps together, either lever or pedal harps, we hear the melodies of five love songs from the past: I Gave My Love a Cherry, The Lover’s Lament, Love’s Old Sweet Song, Love Me Tender, and I Love You I Love you. These melodies have been enjoyed for over a hundred years. I Love you I Love You and Love’s Old Sweet Song were first published in the 1880s. I Gave My Love a Cherry, Lover’s Lament, and Love Me Tender are folk song melodies.
Each love song has a different accompaniment pattern, and each harp part is given the opportunity to play the melody of the love song as well as a turn to play the interesting accompaniments. For instance in the first song, I Gave My Love a Cherry, the first harp plays the melody in thirds for the first verse, and the second harp plays the melody an octave higher for the second verse. The accompaniment patterns are arpeggios in lower and higher registers for each part.
